Self exclusion is one of the most powerful tools available to Australian punters who need a hard stop on their gambling. Unlike simply closing an account, it is a formal, binding request that locks you out for a set period. The process varies depending on whether you are dealing with a licensed local operator or an offshore site, and knowing the difference saves time and frustration. Self Exclusion Through Australian Licensed Operators
Every state and territory in Australia runs its own regulatory framework, which means the exact steps depend on where you live. New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia all operate mandatory self exclusion registers that licensed venues and online platforms must honour. In practice, a single request can bar you from multiple operators across a jurisdiction.
Most licensed online bookmakers now let you self exclude directly through your account settings. Look for a “Responsible Gambling” or “Safer Play” tab, select the exclusion period, and confirm. Periods typically range from six months to five years, with lifetime options available. Once confirmed, the operator must shut down your account, stop all marketing, and return any remaining balance.
If you would prefer to handle it in writing, you can email customer support and request exclusion. Keep a copy of the correspondence. Reputable Australian-licensed sites process these requests within 24 to 48 hours, and many apply the block immediately as a precaution.
National Self Exclusion and Support Services
Australia does not yet have a single national online register covering every operator, but several state-based schemes link together. BetStop, the national self exclusion register, launched as a free service covering all Australian-licensed interactive wagering providers. Registering there blocks you from every participating operator at once, which is far more effective than contacting sites individually.
To register with BetStop, you verify your identity using a Medicare card, passport or driver licence, then choose an exclusion period of three months, six months, one year, five years or lifetime. The register also blocks promotional material, so you stop receiving bonus offers and text messages.
Support services complement these technical blocks. Gambling Help Online runs a 24/7 chat and phone service, and the national helpline on 1800 858 858 connects you with counsellors in every state. Combining a formal exclusion with professional support produces noticeably better outcomes than either measure alone.
Excluding from Offshore Casinos and Staying Committed
Offshore operators sit outside Australian regulation, so BetStop and state registers cannot compel them to act. Most still offer voluntary exclusion because their licensing bodies require it, but enforcement is patchy. If you hold accounts with offshore sites, email each one directly, request a permanent closure, and ask for written confirmation that your details have been removed from marketing lists.
Blocking software adds another layer. Tools such as Gamban and BetBlocker work across phones, tablets and computers, and both cover thousands of gambling domains. Pairing a register entry with blocking software closes most of the gaps.
Commitment matters as much as the mechanics. Tell someone you trust, remove saved payment details, and unsubscribe from every promotional list. Around one in four Australians who set a formal exclusion report reduced gambling urges within the first month, and the figure climbs when support is involved. The paperwork takes minutes; the breathing room it creates is worth far more.
